Christmas gift alert: Bat Dog needs a home (and some crowdfunding)
The illustrated children's book Bat Dog's Forever Home tells the story of a homeless dog. Don't worry – it ends well, which is why Bat Dog can afford to support dog rescue charities
The beautifully illustrated book is written by Cara Thurlbourn, an author who lives in Cambridge and adopted a lurcher two years ago from Ireland. Impressed by the work of rescue charities, her pooch serves as inspiration for Bat Dog. The lonely lurcher is tired of seeing all her friends go home to loving families, which is why she sets out to find her own home. The illustrations are by Jessica Knight, who mixes digital and traditional techniques to create images pretty enough to frame.
Bat Dog Needs a Home is published by Bewick Press, an independent publisher of children's books and young adult fiction. The title is being crowd-funded and the campaign runs until November 25. Among the rewards for pledges are charity pledges, which includes a donations to children in need, and 10% of proceeds of the book sales will go to animal charities Oxfordshire Animal Sanctuary, All Dogs Matter and Accolade Hounds. Since the book is only being funded now, it will not be delivered before Christmas. However, some bundles include a Christmas gift card, so you have something sweet to put under the tree.
